Law school provides you with a foundation on which to build your career. Learning the law, legal theory and writing and research skills is invaluable. There is, however, a vast amount of knowledge that you just can’t get in law school.

Jim Selbach

New Lawyer Mentor

I have accumulated a great wealth of information about the practice. I have seen the good, the bad and the ugly. At this stage of my career I am fortunate to be able to share my experience with those of you who are about to enter the profession.

"I have thoroughly enjoyed practicing law for the last 40 years. It's a rewarding profession, although it can be challenging at times."

Some examples of just a few
things that I will teach are:

  • How to keep clients.
  • How to be persuasive.
  • How to interview clients.
  • How to interact with clients.
  • Clients to avoid.
  • How to deal with experienced attorneys.
  • Everything you need to know about attorneys’ fees.
  • Critical office practices that you must follow.
  • Keys to producing the best product possible.
  • Advocating zealously and civilly at the same time.
  • Ethical mistakes you can never afford to make.
  • Getting help from other lawyers, including finding a mentor.
  • What negotiating skills you can learn right now to be a better negotiator.
  • Advancing and protecting your most valuable asset, your reputation.
